Replacement procedure
First of all, you have to lift up the car to access suspension. Remove wheels and other elements like rear springs and shock absorbers. Remember to hold the rear axle that it doesn’t fall off during the dismantling procedure, using a gearbox lift – for example. If you dismantle shock absorbers first, the rear axle will no longer be held to the body and the axle may tip over.
Your safety first! Remove the hub where you can find break’s disc and abs sensor. The whole thing is held by 4 nuts, also remember to detach any cable attached to the axle. After releasing the rear axle you only have to loosen the two nuts that serve as an anchor point on the axle or you will see two big silent blocks.
Rear axle conception, analysis and diagnostics
The construction of rear axle is very simple because it is a one piece. It is not like other rear axles on the market which are being built using many different parts.
The most common problem that you may find is breakage of the stabilizer bar. Some people call it a torsion bar or anti-roll bar. When this bar breaks the rear axle is irreparable.
Secondly, we might encounter problems with the usage of silent blocks.
Rear suspension damaged in an accident
Some axles can be repaired even after a road accident or after a road trip that caused the vehicle to come to standstill. Unfortunately, Peugeot’s 307 308 3008 or RCZ rear axle is irreparable after an accident as its geometry has changed. Don’t try to straighten it. Moreover, a reconditioned rear axle cost only £175.00.
Rear axle assembly and maintenance
Assembly is just doing the same steps from backwards as during dismantling. This is an ideal time to check the condition of your brakes, pads and discs. Remember it is recommended to bleed the brake system every two years. You should also look at the condition of your shock absorbers, a visual check is enough to see if there are any leaks. When the new rear axle is mounted, place the hoses correctly in appropriate places, because if they come into contact with a moving part you risk a breakdown linked to the braking system. The rear axle of Peugeot 307 308 3008 and RCZ doesn’t require any particular maintenance. Simply check silent blocks when changing tyres, for example.
