Maintenance of the chassis

Maintenance of the car’s chassis is often an underestimated activity. Although we are all aware of the destructive effect of salt on the body of the car, we still forget what it does to the chassis. We all should know that contact with sand, gravel and salt might cause serious problems within a few seasons. Drivers often do not pay attention to the elements hidden from sight, while even cleaning the car’s chassis with water will affect.

However, be careful not to accidentally get wet the alternator and other parts under the bonnet. Especially if the car has a lot of electronics underbody.

Washing and maintenance of the chassis

State of chassis has a crucial influence on the whole condition of the car. Corrupted radiator, not working air conditioning or completely ruined bodywork – that are just a few of many malfunctions that may appear because of salt used during winter on the roads. Proper protection of the new car results in a much better technical condition of the protected elements after years of exploitation. Whether we carry out the maintenance on our own or entrust it to a garage, it is worthwhile to carry out the procedure as fast as possible.

When corrosion protection is carried out right after the purchase of a new car, i.e. when steel parts have not been corroded yet, it gives the best and most long-lasting effect.

Chassis maintenance step by step

What to do if the protection was not carried out when the car was new? Users of second-hand cars also should take care of their car’s chassis protection.

In this case, it is important not to apply anti-corrosion fluid on places when corrosion showed up. In places where corrosion has appeared, first, clean them with suitable rust remover and protect them with an epoxy primer. Proper tools are easy to find in shops and online. Most of the chassis protection operations can be carried out on our own. All we have to do is to get access to the chassis.

Clean chassis and condition of the car

The cleaned chassis must be completely dried so that it can be covered with a protective layer. For this purpose, we should leave the car for several hours. The operation should be done according to instructions given by the manufacturer of the preparation. Application of the preparation should not cause major problems. We can use a spray gun or a brush. Before covering the elements with protective layers, make sure you covered elements of the exhaust system which should not be covered with a preservative layer. After drying anti-corrosion preparation makes a coat which is resistant to external conditions.

Chassis maintenance allows to keep the car in much better condition, therefore every car owner should take care of its chassis.
